Gangtok, September 9, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister of Sikkim, Pawan Kumar Chamling will not be attending the fourth conclave of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), which will be headed by Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.

Chamling was invited by the Convenor of the NEDA, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to attend the September 9 meeting, which will likely be attended by all the Chief Ministers of the eight Northeastern states.

Now, instead of Chamling, Rajya sabha MP Hishey Lachungpa will attend the meeting as a representative of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).

As stated by Biswa Sarma, the conclave will "deliberate on the various policy initiatives taken by the Union Government for the Northeast and also discuss on implementation of various policy initiatives".

Meanwhile, the politics in Sikkim has seen a tectonic shift, with many former SDF leaders having defected to rival parties (BJP and SKM), leaving Chamling as the lone SDF MLA from his state.

Chamling was earlier ousted as CM after the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led by PS Golay won a slender majority in the Sikkim Assembly in the 2019 General Elections.
