Gangtok, October 13, 2019:

Former Chief Minister of Sikkim Pawan Chamling has used a shield vehicle to campaign for the upcoming by-elections.

Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leader Chamling, who was campaigning in the Poklok Kamrang constituency used the shield vehicle to combat stone-pelting.

Earlier, on Thursday SDF candidate Moses Rai’s campaign was attacked allegedly by Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) supporters near the Assamthang helipad Poklok Kamrang in South Sikkim. Chamling was also part of the convoy.

A source had told Inside Northeast that the situation was tense ahead of the elections. “SKM and BJP supporters attacked the team of campaigners. Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was also part of the convoy that was attacked. The SDF team was attacked with rods and stones, which is, frankly, very disturbing…,” said the source on condition of anonymity.

Recently, Chamling’s daughter, Komal Chamling was also injured in an incident of violence.

It may be mentioned here that Sikkim will head for Bye Elections in Gangtok, Martam Rumtek and Poklok Kamrang Constituencies.

The candidates who will contest from SDF are Moses Rai from Poklok-Kamrang constituency, Nuk Tshering Bhutia from Martam-Rumtek constitency, and Rinzing Ongmu from Gangtok constituency.
