Sikkim: 200 stranded migrants to return from Maharashtra by special train

Sikkim Nodal Officer [Evacuation Cell], Rinzing Chewang Bhutia on Tuesday informed that around 200 Sikkimese are being brought from Maharashtra on a special train. The train is scheduled to reach NJP by Thursday.

Bhutia stated that on Monday night, at around 12 pm, a special train for Sikkim left from Bandra Station. The train will travel via Pune, Nagpur, Raipur and Bilaspur, picking up stranded Sikkimese people along the way.

“We received confirmation on Monday morning, that the special train was ready to ferry stranded Sikkimese people and through the day we called up everyone and asked them to reach the train station. The train was supposed to arrive on Wednesday but it got a little delayed so we are expecting it on Thursday,” said Bhutia.

Since many of the stranded Sikkimese in this train will be coming from red zones, special arrangments have been made for quarantine, he stated.

“Although they will be sent to their respective districts, they will be kept in quarantine facilities exclusively meant for red zone returnees. Some residents of North Sikkim, however, will be kept in the exclusive quarantine centre in East district, since North district does not have the required facilities,” said the Nodal Officer.

Meanwhile, Sikkim has decided not to allow inter-district vehicular movement during Unlock 1.0, which begins today. Moreover, gymnasiums and sports complexes will also remain closed.

The decision has been taken after the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in the state. The Prem Sing Tamang government has also decided not to allow the import of any hardware materials from Siliguri for the next 15 days.
