GANGTOK: Indian archer Tarundeep Rai has bowed out of the Tokyo Olympics 2021 after losing 6-5 in Men's Individual Round of 32 in a thriller to Israel's Itay Shanny Archery.

Rai got off to a shaky start in the Olympics, going 7-8-9 in the first set, with the Israeli taking the two points. In the next round, Tarundeep beat Shanny's 8-9-9 with a 10-8-9.

Going into the fourth set, both the archers were on top of each other, sharing points. The Indian veteran's 9-10-9 gave him the important lead heading into the Olympics final in the next set.

Rai failed to make the most of his momentum in the fifth set, as the Israeli, who had his back against the wall, prevailed and forced the match into a shoot-out.

In the previous round, the 37-year-old Army archer Rai had come from behind to win 6-4 against Oleksii Hunbin of Ukraine.
