Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, during the ongoing Union Budget session on July 29 extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman for allocating Central funds to restore Sikkim following the October 2023 Teesta flash floods.
The Lok Sabha MP drew the House’s attention to the huge risks posed to the Himalayan region and national water security by unchecked glacial lakes. He stressed the need for a regional centre of glaciology in Sikkim to monitor, study and mitigate dangers posed by the glacial lakes besides also working on revising national policies for such high risk glacial lakes from the local perspective.
Subba, while thanking the chair for allowing him time to speak for Sikkim, pointed that empowering students through livelihood-oriented skills should start from school-level and subsequently, taken up at advanced platforms.
The Lok Sabha MP further advocated that the internship initiative for youths in companies should be implemented in an inclusive manner so that even youths from remote villages and small states like Sikkim get ample opportunities.
