Annu Rani Becomes First Indian Woman to Qualify for Javelin Final at World Athletics Championships

Doha, October 1, 2019:

Annu Rani became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Women's Javelin Final at the World Athletics Championships currently underway in Doha, Qatar. She also created a new National Record in Women’s Javelin with a throw of 62.43m, bettering her own record of 62.34m.

The 27-year-old Annu sent the iron spear to a distance of 62.43m in her second-round throw, bettering her earlier national record of 62.34m. By doing so, she has qualified for the finals, to be held later today.

The athlete was congratulated by Union Sports Minister, Kiren Rijiju, who lauded her historic effort on social media platform Twitter.

It may be mentioned here that Annu Rani is an Indian javelin thrower and is the current national record holder. She was the first Indian woman to cross a distance of 60m in javelin throw, and has broken the national record multiple times.
