Manipur's Arjuna Award winner Chinglensana Singh Kangujam was accorded a 'hero’s welcome' after touching down at the recently re-christened Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, Manipur, on Saturday. He was met by many friends and well wishers who held aloft a huge banner celebrating his remarkable feat.
It may be mentioned here that the 27-year-old, who plays as a midfielder for the Indian national hockey team, was conferred with the prestigious sports award by President Ram Nath Kovind during the National Sports Day on August 29, which is held every year to celebrate hockey legend Dhyan Chand's birthday. By winning the award, he became one among nineteen athletes to win the award this year.
Kangujam hails from Manipur’s Bashikhong Wangkhei Laumanbi Leikai in Imphal East. By winning the award, he became the seventeenth athlete from his state to win the award. Kunjarani Devi, who won the award in 1999, was the first athlete from Manipur to do so.
He won the gold medal in the 2017 Asia Cup and bronze medal in Asian Games in 2018 with the Indian national hockey team.
