Ace pugilist Shiva Thapa (63 kg) from Assam has won the Gold medal at the 4th Elite Men's National Boxing Championship held at Baddi University of Emerging Sciences and Technology in Himachal Pradesh.

Thapa defeated Akash Sangwan by a score of 4-1 to win the gold medal. Thapa, who is a tactical boxer, was able to defeat the hard-hitter Sangwan with a tactical game. This is Thapa's first national-level title in 3 years. It may be mentioned here that Thapa is a two-time Olympian and four-time Asian medallist.

It may be mentioned here that Thapa, who hails from Guwahati in Assam, is supported by the Olympic Gold Quest and Anglian Medal Hunt Company, participated in the 2012 London Olympics, and was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics.
The 25-year-old is employed with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. He is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Shiva Thapa qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic in the Men's 56 kg event, but failed to move beyond the first round, after he lost 0-3 to the 2012 Gold medalist Robeisy Ramírez from Cuba in an upset result.
Mike Tyson's bouts inspired him to take the sport seriously. Shiva rose as early as 3 a.m. in the mornings to balance his training and studies.[
