Imphal, September 30, 2019:

Assam Rifles has taken the unique initiative to organize the first-ever Friendship Football Tournament between India and Myanmar along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations. The tournament was organized between selected villages of India and Myanmar along the border.

Five teams from border villages of Myanmar and seven from India participated in the Friendship Football Tournament.

The inaugural Friendship Cup kicked off on September 27 at the remote hamlet of Nampisha in Kamjong district of Manipur.

The final match was played between Teijang village team from Myanmar against the host team from Nampisha village on September 29. The former won after a penalty shootout with the score reading 4-2.

Team Myanmar bagged the attractive prize of Rs 35,000 and the runners up grabbed Rs 25,000. A consolation prize of Rs. 5,000 was also given out for each participating team from Myanmar apart from trophies and medals.

A vibrant cultural show was presented by villagers from both sides along the Indo-Myanmar border. The pioneering event places yet another feather in the cap of Assam Rifles, which continues to live up to its motto of ‘Friends of the North East’.
