Guwahati, May 26, 2019:

Assam's Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has added yet another feather to his cap. The Minister, who is already serving as the President of the Badminton Authority of India (BAI), has now been elected the Vice President of Badminton Asia.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, 50, received 35 votes from a total of 40 polled in the election that was held on Saturday. Also, Anton Aditya Subowo was re-elected President of Badminton Asia.

Himanta was last year unanimously elected the BAI president during its annual general body meeting in Goa.

The development was announced by the official Twitter handle of the Badminton Authority of India late on Saturday night.

Twitter users congratulated the Assam Minister on his new role. User Mamoni Barman wrote: "Good dada...All the best."

Meanwhile, user Jayanta Chakraborty wrote: "Proud moment for the people of Northeast

In a recent stride towards popularising the sport of badminton in the State, the Yonex-Sunrise 83rd Senior National badminton championships held was at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium and ABITA stadium in Guwahati city of Assam in February, 2019.

It may be mentioned that Badminton Asia is the governing body of the badminton sport in Asia under the flagship of Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Badminton Asia is currently represented by 43 member associations from 5 sub-regions all across Asia. The 5 sub-regions recognised under the Badminton Asia Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016 are : East Asia, South East Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia

As the governing body, Badminton Asia focuses on promoting, managing and developing the sport of badminton in Asia in principles of specificity and universality.
