New Delhi, August 12, 2019:

Wrestler Babita Phogat of 'Dangal' fame, along with her father, Mahavir, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here today. The duo was inducted into the saffron party's fold by Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

The two popular faces of Haryana joined the BJP at an event at the its headquarters in New Delhi on Monday. The Phogats joining the BJP is expected to give the saffron party a boost heading into the ensuing elections in the north Indian state.

Mahavir Phogat said that the reason for them joining the BJP is that they are impressed with policies and programmes of the Narendra Modi government.

It is to be mentioned that Babita Phogat came out in support of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after his controversial remarks on Kashmiri girls.

She had written on Twitter, "Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has not made any such statement that is offensive to our sisters and daughters. I urge media to not misinterpret his statement."
