Guwahati, June 25, 2019:

India is not known to be a traditional 'rugby powerhouse' as the highly-physical sport is dominated by the countries like New Zealand, Wales, England, South Africa, etc. But India certainly seems to be taking strides in the right direction as they look to establish themselves in the sport!

The Indian women's rugby team has now made history by defeating an international team for the first time! The 'tough enough' girls from India defeated Singapore over the weekend to register a historic win and it was a great day for Indian women in sports in general!

On Saturday, June 22, the 15-side team registered a key victory over Singapore to finish third in the Asia Women’s Division 1 Rugby XVs Championship fixture at Manila, Philippines. This is a great result for the team as they now have their eyes firmly set on the Rugby World Cup which is to be held in 2021.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to express his elation at the girls' achievement. He tweeted: "Indian Women's Rugby Team Makes History with First Ever International Win. India emerged victorious against Singapore with a 21-19 score. Our women Rugby team has huge potentials as it's only third time the team played an international match after having been formed a year ago."

Our girls truly have done us proud!
