Manipur's Sarita Devi Knocked Out of AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships

Ulan-Ude, October 6, 2019:

Indian boxer Sarita Devi, who hails from the state of Manipur, has crashed out of the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. Sarita Devi lost 0-5 to Russia's Natalia Shadrina in the 60kg category preliminaries on Sunday. This loss is expected to be a big setback for the Arjuna awardee ahead of the Olympics next year.

The 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships are being held in Ulan-Ude, Russia from 3 to 13 October 2019. 224 competitors from from 57 nations are participating in the Championships.

However, Jamuna Boro from Assam, who is competing in the 54kg bantam category, defeated Erdenedalai Michidmaa of Mongolia on Friday, to get the country off to a positive start.

Jamuna bagged the gold in India Open boxing tournament in the 54kg category, in May this year, beating Sandhyarani Devi 5-0 in the final bout.

In July, the Assam-based boxer added another gold to her collection, defeating Italy’s veteran boxer Giulia Lamagna 5-0 at the 23rd President’s Cup in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.
