Mary Kom Enters Quarters of World Women's Boxing Championships

Guwahati, October 9, 2019:

Six-time champion MC Mary Kom (51kg) yesterday advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Women's Boxing Championships that is being held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

MC Mary Kom advanced to the last eight after a hard-fought victory in the Last 16 stage here. Mary Kom triumphed 5-0 against Thailand's Jutamas Jitpong, who proved to be a tough challenge to overcome for the six-time world champion.

It may be mentioned here that Mary Kom is chasing her first world medal in the 51kg division. However, the Indian boxers saw mixed fortunes as silver-medallist Saweety Boora (75kg) lost her pre-quarterfinal match. She lost against European Games gold-medallist Lauren Price.

Earlier, Sarita Devi, who also hails from the state of Manipur, has crashed out of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Sarita Devi lost 0-5 to Russia’s Natalia Shadrina in the 60kg category preliminaries on Sunday. This loss is expected to be a big setback for the Arjuna awardee ahead of the Olympics next year.

Jamuna Boro from Assam, who is competing in the 54kg bantam category, defeated Erdenedalai Michidmaa of Mongolia on Friday, to get the country off to a positive start.

It may be mentioned here that the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships are being held in Ulan-Ude, Russia from 3 to 13 October 2019. 224 competitors from from 57 nations are participating in the Championships.
