Three Archers from Nagaland and Manipur, from the Assam Rifles Archery team, have bagged a rich haul of 5 Golds, 3 Silvers and a Bronz medals at the 'World Police and Fire Games' held in Chengdu, China.
Rifleman G Robert Sharma, who hails from Manipur, clinched 3 Gold medals in the Compound Bow Archery while Rifleman Z Demo, from Nagaland, bagged a Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Wooden bow event.
Mahila Rifleman SP Lydia, from Manipur, also won 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the Women’s category in the Wooden bow events.
The 3 Archers were trained by 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South)
Rifleman G Robert Sharma had earlier won 3 Gold medals in the previous World Police and Fire Games held at Los Angeles in 2017. Demo and Lydia, on the other hand, bagged medals in their very first games.
The archers participated in the Bare Target, Field Archery and 3 D Archery events, winning medals in each of the three events they participated in.
The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial athletic event, open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world. The WPFG Federation is an arm of the California Police Athletic Federation, an American non-profit organization. In 2021 the host city will be Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2023 the host city will be Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada.
The Games attract approximately 10,000 entrants, slightly fewer than the Summer Olympic Games, and exceeding the third position holder, the Commonwealth Games. In the early 2010s, The United Kingdom hosted all three events consecutively; the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, followed by the 2013 World Police and Fire Games in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and ending with Glasgow, Scotland, hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games – the first time all three events have been hosted by the same nation consecutively.
