The Northeast United Football Club (NEUFC) has climbed to the top of the top of the points tally after a thumping win over newcomers Odisha under the lights at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati.

The highlanders had secured the win over Odisha FC thanks to a late winner from Asamoah Gyan, after Xisco Hernandez cancelled out an early NEUFC lead given by Redeem Tlang in the 72nd minute. But a red card to defender Carlos Delgado immediately after cost Odisha its initiative as Gyan thundered home a header to seal all three points for the Highlanders.

The Highlanders had earlier secured a draw against defending champions Bengaluru in their opening encounter. With this draw, the Northeast side climbed to the top of the rankings, with 4 points from 2 games, in the current season of the ISL.
In the current season, which is the sixth edition of the ISL, Hyderabad FC replaced disbanded FC Pune City, whereas Delhi Dynamos moved to Bhubaneshwar and rebranded as Odisha FC. Bengaluru FC are the defending champions, who won their maiden Indian Super League title by defeating FC Goa 1–0 in the final. The regular season will begin on 20 October 2019 and will conclude in March, 2020.
