Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw has been pronounced an eight-month suspension for a doping violation after ingesting a prohibited substance Terbutaline, said BCCI on Tuesday.
He will serve the ban till November 15, 2019 but can resume training after September 15 midnight.
Prithvi Shaw made his test debut last year and to his credit, has already scored a ton.
The BCCI said Shaw admitted to the Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) but he asserted that it was unintentional, ingesting the substance when he had used an over-the-counter cough syrup.
Later, the right-handed batsman released a statement on Tuesday saying he will accept the punishment and hoped this example would deter other athletes from neglecting protocol when it came to taking medicines.
Shaw is nursing a hip injury and missed the tour of West Indies. He will not be available for Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and a part of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy.
Moreover, Prithvi will also miss India's home series against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Meanwhile, he took it to the social media and twitted: “We as athletes need to be extremely careful in taking any medicine for the smallest of medical ailments even if the medicine is available over the counter.”
