India’s trailblazing gymnast, Dipa Karmakar, officially declared her retirement from professional gymnastics on Monday. At 30, Karmakar leaves behind an indelible mark on the world of sports, embodying resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Known for her groundbreaking achievements, Karmakar’s decision comes after years of dedication and monumental milestones in a sport where she defied both personal and societal expectations.

“After much thought, I have decided to retire from gymnastics,” Karmakar expressed in her official statement. “This decision was not easy for me, but I believe this is the right time. Gymnastics has shaped my life in ways I can never forget, and I am grateful for every moment—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.”

Karmakar's journey is one of perseverance, overcoming the odds from a young age. She vividly recalled being a five-year-old girl doubting her future in gymnastics due to her flat feet. Yet, her determination led her to become India’s first female gymnast to compete in the Olympics, where she stunned the world with her performance of the Produnova Vault in Rio 2016. That feat not only made her a national hero but also etched her name in the history of the sport.

“Representing India on the global stage, winning medals, and performing the Produnova Vault at the Rio Olympics were the most cherished moments of my career," she shared. Reflecting on her final victory at the Asian Gymnastics Championship in Tashkent, she explained how her body signaled that it was time to step away, even though her heart yearned to continue.

She also acknowledged the support from the Tripura government, the Gymnastics Federation, the Sports Authority of India, GoSports Foundation, and Meraki Sport and Entertainment.

Ending her statement, Karmakar reserved her most personal gratitude for her family. "Through my good and bad days, my family has always been my rock. I am eternally thankful for their unwavering support," she wrote.
