Tripura: 7660 police personnel deployed for peaceful celebration of Durga puja

AGARTALA: Tripura police have made elaborate security arrangements for a peaceful Durga puja celebration in the state, according to a top police official.

According to Inspector General of Police (IG-Law and Order) Arindam Nath, at least  7660 police officers will be deployed in the state to maintain law and order and regulate traffic during the puja.

According to reports, Durga Puja will be celebrated this year at 2176 locations/pandals in the state in accordance with the state government's COVID norms.

This includes 865 Puja in cities and 1311 Puja in rural areas.

Durga Puja will be celebrated at 554 pandals in Agartala and surrounding areas, Nath stated.

Furthermore, eight CRPF platoons have been deployed in eight major police station areas.

Security forces will work together to strengthen security and ensure a peaceful Durga Puja celebration, he added.

Meanwhile, BSF has been asked to seal the border and increase area dominance patrolling in bordering villages. Separately, the police and TSR have increased preventive operations in vulnerable areas, according to a police official.

He further stated that while, separately, the police and the Tripura State Rifles have increased preventive operations in vulnerable areas, the Railway Police stations are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and security of Puja attendees, he said.

There will be a total of 157 police assistance booths throughout the states, including 50 in Agartala.

According to Nath, a total of 98 watchtowers are being built in strategic locations, including 25 in the capital city.

Moreover, CCTV will be installed in sensitive and important areas where high footfalls are expected. 78 CCTV cameras will be installed across the state, excluding those installed as part of the smart city project in Agartala.

Nath also said that under the Emergency Response Security System, a total of 88 vehicles will be on standby at all times, with NCC assisting with traffic control during the puja.

Police personnel including female officers have been deployed in various locations to maintain surveillance and prevent pick-pocketing.

Aside from that, 200 women police volunteers in Gomati district and 240 in West Tripura district will assist the police.

Vehicles and pedestrians will be prohibited from using some major roads in the city between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. on puja days from October 12 to October 15, he said.

In addition, Anti-sabotage checks have been increased, and the services of the bomb detection and disposal squad and the dog squad are being used.

A state disaster response force will be kept on standby to respond to any emergency.
