Congress accused of politicising Assam-Mizoram border issue: BJP MPs from NE

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs from four northeastern states today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the recent border clashes between Assam and Mizoram on July 26.

The MPs have submitted a four-page memorandum on the latest border tensions between Assam and Mizoram, accusing the Opposition Congress of politicising the sensitive issue.

The memorandum lauded Modi's NDA government's "development work in the Northeast," describing it as "historic and unparalleled."

In contrast, they said, the successive Congress governments at the Centre failed to live up to the region's hopes.

Meanwhile, they expressed their deep sorrow over the violence on the Assam-Mizoram border.

The BJP MPs in their memorandum also said that they want to convey to all those elements who see the Assam-Mizoram issue as a means of "spreading chaos in India" that their shenanigans will not work.

"At the same time, we would like to express our clear disapproval of the attempt by sections of our polity led by the Congress Party to engage in politics over these events and use this as a means of one-upmanship," the MPs added.

Besides the BJP MPs from Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, Union Law Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Union Petroleum Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, also met PM Modi in the Parliament House.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Minister Rijiju alleged that some "foreign forces are fuelling fire" in the region by making inciting statements and promoting manipulated content.

Reports suggest that PM Modi told the MPs that the Northeast is near and dear to his heart.

Rijiju stated that Prime Minister Modi has stated that he does not view the region through the lens of politics.

There were 16 MPs in the meeting with the prime minister -- 12 from Assam, two from Arunachal Pradesh, and one each from Manipur and Tripura.

The MPs emphasised that the chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram have expressed a desire to resolve issues amicably.

On July 26, at least six Assam Police personnel and one civilian were killed, and more than 50 people were injured in a firefight between the two states' police on a disputed stretch of their border near Dholai in Cachar district.
