GUWAHATI: Hundreds of Congress workers, including state unit president and Rajya Sabha member Ripun Bora, courted arrest when they congregated at Guwahati Club roundabout to stage ‘Raj Bhavan Gherao’ programme demanding abrogation of the three contentious farm laws and others.

The programme was also initiated in protest against unprecedented price rise of essential commodities and fuel.

Those arrested when the protesters tried to break through a barricade, also included Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, Samaguri MLA Rakibul Hussain among other leaders of the party. The arrested party workers have been kept confined at 10th Assam Police Battalion here.

Police also detained hundreds of Congress workers at Rangia in Kamrup district. At least three buses full of protesters were on their way from Bhabanipur in Barpeta district to Guwahati. They were travelling to participate in the Raj Bhavan Gherao programme.

The Congress has also alleged police has detained party workers at Changsari, Baihata Chariali and Amingaon as well.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee had recently took out a bicycle rally through the city in protest against fuel price rise and skyrocketing prices of essentials.
