KOHIMA: Even as the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isaak-Muivah) remains firm over its demand for a separate flag and Constitution for the Nagas in its negotiations with the Centre, a Naga flag has found its way to the Great Wall of China.

Global Naga Forum, a platform for Nagas across the world, yesterday posted a photo of a person holding an unfurled Naga flag on the Great Wall of China, one of the seven wonders of the world. Interestingly, reports last year claimed that top NSCN(IM) commanders along with some cadres had gone to Yunnan province in China seeking support due to India's hardening stand in the peace talks.

The Global Naga Forum was recently in the news after it expressed strong opposition to the speech delivered by the Nagaland Governor, R N Ravi on the 58th Statehood day on December 1. Ravi, it needs mention here, has been staunchly opposing the introduction of the separate flag and Constitution for the Naga people.

“The speech, to say the least is puerile, self-contradictory and misleading,” it stated in a press release. “History bears testimony to the fact that the creation of the state of Nagaland in 1963 and the politics of betrayal machinated and executed through carrot and stick and divide and rule policies has not worked and will never succeed,” the GNF asserted, slamming the Governor.

Ravi made it clear that there would be no separate flag and constitution, amid persistent demand for these by the NSCN(I-M) to achieve a solution to the Naga political issue.

In his message to the people on the eve of 58th Statehood Day, Mr. Ravi, the interlocutor for the Naga peace process, said the essence of India is its unity in diversity, on the demand for integration of Naga inhabited areas in other States, especially Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

“The Indian national flag and Constitution are the pride of the people of India. The Government of India is absolutely clear that there is and there shall be only one national flag and Constitution in India,” he said.

Meanwhile, Inside Northeast sources have suggested that the "final solution" for the protracted peace talks will only be sealed by the Centre after the Manipur Assembly elections in 2022 as the BJP does not wish to lose its standing there.
