Ripun Bora accuses govt of using forces to “kill” Congress workers

GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora on Saturday alleged that the state government tried to kill some of the Congress workers using the state police when the opposition party workers congregated here to carry out a Raj Bhavan Gherao programme.

He alleged that one of the police officers took out his service gun to shoot at party workers, “but fortunately it fell off his hand”.

He said the party has lodged a complaint with the police submitting video footage of the incident. “We will move the court if police does not take action,” Bora added.

He further said the party would move the Election Commission of India against the BJP government in this regard.

“We had congregated taking due permission from authorities concerned. The use of forces to dominate a democratic pretest demonstration is unbecoming of a government. Hundreds of out party workers and leaders were detained and kept confined at 10^th Assam Police Battalion headquarters. Thousands of workers coming from other districts were detained in different police stations,” he alleged.

The Congress was protesting against price rise of essential commodities and fuel and demanding abrogation of the three contentious farm laws.

“We condemn the attitude of the government and the state police. It’s a government led by Sarbananda Sonowal who himself rose to power staging democratic agitations. But, over the past four and half years, this government has never been tolerated any democratic agitation we have staged,” Bora said.

“This government is no longer with the people of the state. And, the people have also become aware of it. So, they will decide the fate of the BJP in the ensuing elections,” he added.
