AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has recently sparked controversy over his suggestion to the government officials of Tripura not to fear contempt of court as it is not easy to send someone to jail on those charges and the police are under his control.
Deb, speaking at the biennial conference of Tripura Civil Service Officers' Association showed his displeasure over a section of officers who always remind him of rules and law while implementing government decisions and also said that they might be pulled up for contempt of court.
"It is not easy to send someone to jail on contempt charges," Deb said.

"And, I control the police. The way the officials are citing the situation as if contempt of court was like a tiger! I want to assure all of you that I am the tiger. The power is in the hands of who runs the government," Deb, who holds the Home portfolio, said amid huge applause from the audience.
Deb also said that government officers must listen to elected representatives of the locality and execute the projects and schemes according to political bosses without fearing the court or laws.
The opposition slammed Deb's comment on the judiciary. CPM accused Deb of disrespecting the judiciary and the court whereas Congress called it a reflection of autocratic mindset and replication of the Hitler regime. TMC on the other hand said it is a mindless remark to create disorder in the society.
