BAKSA: In a yet another incident of alleged witch-hunting, a 50-year old man was brutally beaten to death by the people of his village in Assam on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.
The incident took place in Kumarikata in Tamulpur subdivision of Baksa district. The victim has been identified as Biren Boro.
A team led by the Kumarikata police rushed to the spot to rescue the victim after being informed about the incident.
However, the mob became violent and attacked Police Officer Nilavjyoti Nath and vandalised the police van causing severe damage.
The Police managed to admit Biren Boro at a dispensary in a very critical condition. However, Boro succumed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
According to sources, the mob ransacked the victim's house as well. His family somehow managed to escape saving their lives.
After being informed about the incident, another team of police including Tamulpur subdivision police officer Asima Kalita, Officer in-charge of Tamulpur police station Dwipen Kalita along with magistrate Rupkamal Rabha reached the spot.
On being questioned by the police, the mob became aggressive once again and started attacking them.
After bringing the mob under control, the police arrested five persons including Lakhindra Boro (32), Sunos Narzary (21), Birkhang Basumatary (23), Ringkhang Basumatary (23), and Rajen Narzary (47); on the suspicion of being involved in the murder of the victim.
