30 Rohingya nationals apprehended in Tripura

Guwahati, January 22, 2019:

Thirty Rohingya immigrants have been apprehended from Churaibari near Assam- Tripura Border by the police and have been taken to the Churaibari Watch Post.

Among the thirty, nine are male, nine female, and twelve kids.

While speaking to media, one of the Rohingya confirmed that they are Rohingya nationals and said, “We were working in Jammu but due to cold weather we moved to Delhi and as we did not have any work in Delhi so a local from Kolkata asked us to move to Guwahati so that we can find some work for livelihood. First, we moved to Guwahati, then we moved to Agartala where we booked a hotel but when the hotel authorities came to know we were Rohingyas, he asked us to leave saying it to be a border area so we were on our way to Guwahati back again. In Guwahati, we will find some work and stay there.”

The Rohingya people are an ethnic minority that lives mainly in the northern region of Rakhine State, Myanmar, and have been described as one of the world's most persecuted minorities. They describe themselves as descendants of Arab traders who settled in the region many generations ago. More than 140,000 of the estimated 800,000 to 1,100,000 Rohingya have been forced to seek refuge in displacement camps after the 2012 Rakhine State riots. To escape the systemic violence and persecution in Myanmar, an estimated 100,000 people have since fled the camps. As of December 2017, an estimated 655,000 to 700,000 Rohingya people have fled to Bangladesh since 25 August 2017, to avoid ethnic and religious persecution by Myanmar's security forces.
