Farmers in Tripura to get healthy with ‘nutritional gardens’

Farmers of Tripura, in the near future, will have their own nutritional garden in their own land so that they can have their own nutritional requirements filled. The initiative has been undertaken by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) under their home science branch, a KVK scientist told this reporter. This would definitely help the farmers to be self-reliant amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As per the ambitious project, a minimum of 50 farmers in the initial level will be selected under each of eight Krishi Vigyan Kendras of the state. The selected farmers will be trained, given technical support and all other necessary support such as pesticides, medicines, etc. so that they can grow their own nutritional garden. If the project sees success, the initiative will be taken on a large scale.

“The focus of the project is to facilitate our farmers with good quality food that will be produced by themselves. If you see in the broader spectrum, the farmers will consume as to what they will produce which will have a larger impact on the economic condition and health of the farmers as well” Diganta Das, in-charge of KVK Bir Chandra Manu said.

On the progress, Das said, now we are collecting data from the farmers. The entire model will require a certain amount of land and formation of crop sequence—as to what should be planted and where will be decided as per the volume of land a farmer acquires.

He also said, “We are planning to design the project in such a way so that a farmer who comes under the purview of the project is not needed to buy vegetables from markets. And, intentionally, we have selected the interior villages for implementation of the project. If one farmer from the rural area succeeds to achieve self-reliance for feeding his family others will naturally follow his footsteps. And, the biggest positive thing of the project is initially the farmer in Tripura has to invest his land and labor only, no capital is required at all since everything will be given from the KVKs”.

In South Tripura as specific, five villages which include Laxmicherra, Paikhola, Pilak, and two villages of Sabroom were selected to kick start the project.
