Tripura: ‘Inadequate measures’ to contain COVID-19 outbreak irks people

Detection of six positive COVID-19 cases in West Tripura caused an undercurrent of apprehension across the district, in cases, prompting people to demand adequate measures from the government. In such an instance, locals of Netaji Chowmuhani on May 24^th, 2020, alleged insufficient measures from the civil administration to contain the spread of the COVID-19 in the city.

People sharply criticized the move undertaken by the state administration claiming that as to why no containment zones were marked in the city and as to why the vulnerable areas were not being sealed off.

Meanwhile, speaking to Inside NE, District Magistrate West Tripura Sandeep Mahatme said all the necessary precautions were taken as per the new Standard Operating Procedures.

“As per the new SOP, there is no need to mark containment zones or so as the persons who have been found to be positive returned only recently and there are no scopes for them to infect others as they are asked to stay in home quarantine”, said Mahatme.

He also maintained that all the positive cases had been shifted to Bhagat Singh Youth hostel Covid treatment centre. “All of them are under treatment. Soon after the reports have been released the identified persons are shifted to treatment centre. The contact tracing process of all the positive patients is also over” he added.

Some of the highly placed officials, on condition of anonymity, also said, strict actions will be taken if someone is found breaching the strict restrictions.

“The restrictions are in place to prevent the disease from spreading. There are some complaints that people are not following the rules. The administration is planning to take some stringent steps against the errant civilians” said a source

COVID-19 in Tripura

With three more persons, who returned from Delhi by the Rajdhani Express, tested positive to the COVID-19 on May 24, the state tally has gone up to 194 with 27 active cases.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who also holds the Health portfolio took to the social media and announced the development. As per the Chief Minister’s tweet, a total of 991 samples had been tested and three of them come positive.

Meanwhile, Assam has registered highest COVID-19 cases with 427 cases; of which 363 are active and 57 havea been cured or diascharged and four died due to the infection.
