Agartala, June 1, 2019:

In a major political twist, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb effected a change in his ministry and dropped Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman from the state cabinet on Friday.

An official notification signed by in-charge Chief Secretary of Tripura Kumar Alok said Sudip Roy Barman ‘ceased to be a member of the council of ministers’ and Chief Minister will oversee three of four departments held by Mr. Barman while Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarman will hold one department.

Deb was unhappy with Barman for the latter’s ‘anti-party’ activities. Barman had stayed away from campaigning for BJP in the recently concluded LS elections. He even asked voters to vote for ‘eligible candidate’ that did not go down well with the BJP leadership. It is alleged that Sudip Roy Barman was helping Congress to gain grounds in Tripura.

In the month of April, Barman had surrendered his police protection as a mark of protest after several incidents of attacks on government doctors in the state.

Sudip Roy Barman is the son of former Tripura Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Burman. He had quit Congress two years back and joined the BJP with six Congress legislators ahead of assembly elections held in February 2018.

He is the MLA of Agartala (West Tripura) constituency since 1998 and was a strong contender for the post of Chief Minister.
