Tripura High Court Bans Animal and Bird Sacrifice In Temples

Agartala, September 28, 2019:

The Tripura High Court on Friday banned the sacrifice of animals and festivals for 'religious reasons' in the State's temples. This order comes merely days before the upcoming Durga Puja, to be held in October.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjoy Karol and Justice Arindam Lodh pronounced the order after hearing public interest litigation.

The order of the bench read: "No person including the State shall be allowed to sacrifice any animal/bird within the precincts of any of the temples within the State of Tripura. "

The bench directed all the district magistrates and superintendents of police of the state to ensure that the order is being followed in the State.

Moreover, the Bench also directed the installation of CCTV cameras at two major temples of the state - Devi Tripureswari temple and Chaturdas Devata temple - where sacrificial rites are known to take place.

The bench also ordered that the Chief Secretary of the State should obtain footage every month.

It may be mentioned here that the ban on animal sacrifice rites has been a long pending demand of animal rights activist groups.
