Agartala, October 24, 2019:

The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) held a sit-in protest against the looming Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in Tripura’s Khumulwng, the headquarters of Autonomous District Council areas.

INPT General Secretary Jagadish Debbarma expressed his concern regarding the CAB. He said that the Bill is dangerous to the indigenous people of the region. Bangladeshi migrants, using the CAB, would be settled in eastern and northeastern India, thereby depriving the original people of the region of their indigenous rights.

According to Debbarma, the central government intends to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill for vote-bank politics.

The INPT GS said that after the Bill is passed, the indigenous people of the region will become a minority.

INPT also demanded review of the Tripura High Court’s decision to ban animal sacrifice in the temples across the state.

Debbarma said the practice is an integral part of their traditions and decried the ‘interference’ of the High Court in the indigenous traditions of Tripura.
