Tripura: No harsh impact over AMPHAN as moderate rains predicted

Though the impact of AMPHAN—the super cyclone is not predicted to be harsh for Tripura, moderate rainfall and thunderstorm may lash out in isolated places of the state, a highly placed source in the disaster management said. The source also revealed that all the district magistrates of the state had been already communicated a letter as to what needful measured were needed to be taken or so. “Since there are indications that the super cyclone AMPHAN may result in serious problems in the neighboring Bangladesh—specifically Khepupara, we can’t afford to ignore it”, said the source.    

In the letter forwarded to the District Magistrates, special secretary S Chaudhory highlighted the gravity of the situation and asked all the DMs to take proper initiatives to prevent any eventuality.

“As such there is no warning of high impact of AMPHAN to Tripura but there is no certainty of movement of exact path of the cyclone as predicted by IMD. Hence, the administration may be prepared to handle if there is any high impact to this cyclone.  IMD Agartala centre has forecasted that there will be thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, gusty wind of speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall at isolated placed in. The state in all districts during 20-21 May 2020. However, the state control room and district control rooms are being informed periodically about the movement of the cyclone”, the letter reads.

The secretary also urged everyone to stay alert to tackle the situation.

“Keeping the extreme situation due to impact of AMPHAN in Tripura, I am further directed to request you to be alert to the situation and accordingly kindly take necessary preparedness measures at your level as per your district and below level disaster management plans to tackle the situation”.

In a separate letter, the state administration  had also asked the DMs to ensure proper co-ordination between among the stakeholders.  

 “Coordination among the key line departments, agencies, TSR Bns, NDRF, disaster management teams, NGOs etc for immediate search, rescue, evacuation and relief, immediate restoration of key services, damage assessment etc. Identification of safe shelters, key officials, arrangement of minimum standards of relief” the letter reads.

 “Testing of equipments such as boats, lights, first aid and other rescue equipments and ensure their readiness in Tripura. Only trained and identified persons should operate the equipments. Availability of fund with the local administrations for immediate relief and assistance.Effective function of Emergency Operation Centres. Publicize of important numbers. Any other as appropriate by District Disaster Management Authorities as per Disaster”, the letter added.
