A heavy spell of torrential rain accompanied by ghastly wind wreaks havoc over several parts of Tripura on June 18th, 2020. The massive storm that made its way through some of the areas such as Chandrapur, Kahyerpur, and few other places located in the city peripheries caused serious damage to the public property prompting civil administration and disaster management authorities to swing into action.
According to reports, the storm made its landfall at the areas like Chandrapur, Khayerpur, ISBT, and some parts of Bisalgarh. The incessant downpour also triggered the water of the river Katakhal to swell up the danger limit. According to the local sources, many residential houses constructed in the banks of Katakhal have been swayed by the water. In some areas, minor landslides were also reported but no major casualty reported yet.
As per report published by state disaster control authority, altogether 18 houses had been damaged by the storm and Rs 0.113 lakh was provided to the affected families as an immediate relief. Sources said, the assessment of the damaged properties was under progress and soon there would be a conclusive figure on the matter.

In the meantime, a team of officials headed by SDM Sadar Ashim Saha reached the worst affected areas of Sadar sub-division in the morning. The SDM exchanged views with the locals and was assured of all the help from the administration.
“In the morning around 8 to 8:30 am a massive storm hit several parts of the region. We have come here with our field teams for assessment of the situation. Immediate reliefs are being distributed among people and soon after the final assessment field and procuring necessary approval from the District Magistrate left over money would be transferred directly”, the SDM told reporters on the sidelines of his visit.
At Khayerpur, which is one of the worst hit regions of the state, MLA Ratan Chakraborty and MP Pratima Bhowmik went to the victim families and assured them of all the support.
The MLA while beefing the media persons said, “We have been facing a dual challenge. But, we are ready to take on any serious situation. We have done prior meetings and kept all the precautionary measures in place to battle any perceptible situation caused by the rain. People have extended support and I am very much thankful to God that despite such a heavy storm we don’t have to lose our dear ones”.
MP Pratima Bhowmik said, “I have visited three consecutive constituencies in and around Agartala city. There are certain places where houses and shops are damaged. But, the administration has started to tackle the situation actively and immediate reliefs are being provided to the poor. The situation is under control”.
According to Agartala Metrological Department, the rain lashed out since Wednesday night which continued till this afternoon was the highest ever rainfall recorded for this monsoon. “The monsoon has just begun but as of now it is the highest rainfall for the season. In Agartala the total rainfall recorded in the last two days stood at 117.2. It also predicted heavy rainfall for Friday in almost all the districts excluding North Tripura and Unakoti.
