Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party MLA Shiladitya Dev on Saturday condemned the various parties associated with the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) which was published on August 31. Addressing the press here, he said that the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) started out supporting the rights of the indigenous people, but now, they have become pro-Bangladeshi.
He also criticized the student body for opposing the AADHAR cards in Assam. "They have ensured that the illegal foreigners get enough time to procure fake documents", further adding that the persecuted Hindu Bangladeshis are the only community who have been targetted by the AASU.
The Hojai MLA further alleged that many Bangladeshi nationals have been included in the NRC, whereas many indigenous sons of the soil have been excluded due to a 'conspiracy'. He also said that the Nationa Population Register (NPR) had been done before beginning the NRC process. He said that the NRC should be converted to NPR and linked with the AADHAR.
Further alleging that many 'illegal aliens' have been included in the final NRC draft, he said that the final NRC is against the democracy of India.
Dev also lashed out at the NRC co-ordinator Prateek Hajela, calling him a "traitor to the Assamese people". "He did not maintain transparency and it is concerning that of the nineteen lakh who have been excluded, almost 4 lakh did not appeal at all."
