It has recently come to light Government of Assam finally seems to have parted ways with its 'high-profile' Tourism Brand Ambassador, Priyanka Copra Jonas!
Priyanka's initial appointment as the brand ambassador of 'Awesome Assam' was met with much skepticism as many sections of society felt that the honor should go to Assam-born figures such as the eminent actor Adil Khal, or even the 'sprint queen' Hima Das, who had truly put Assam on the world stage by breaking records left, right, and centre.
When the Assam government had spent Rs 2.37 crore on a single visit of the state tourism department's brand back when she was first roped in for a two-year deal, to heavy criticism.
However, the Government chose the more 'mainstream' option in the Bollywood diva, Chopra, who was also starting to make waves in the international arena with her leading role in the hit television-thriller 'Quantico'.
Years on, people of the State were left shellshocked when Chopra stayed mum while Assam was facing one of its most devastating floods in recent years. After lakhs of people were displaced from their houses and dozens were killed as a result of the flood fury, netizens were truly concerned with Priyanka's negligence towards a State that she is supposed to be representing on the World Stage.
When 'Piggychops' uploaded a pic of her svelte bikini bod on social, a concerned social media 'netizen' had had enough and finally spoke up. This gentleman, a certain Vineet Jain, lashed out at the megastar and wrote: "Assam is reeling under devastating floods and its brand ambassador is reveling. It's her life but doesn't she have even an iota of responsibility? Maybe a single tweet? I still don't get why are we so obsessed with actors."
The 'netizen' had tagged Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his scathing attack on 'Piggychops'. Reacting to the tweet, Assam's Finance Minister Himanta wrote: "She is not with Assam Govt now. Her contract with assam Govt expired as far as I know."
Himanta's response has shocked the people of Assam! Has even Priyanka deserted us in this time of need? Not to worry, though, as 'Khiladi' of Bollywood Akshay Kumar come to the rescue and has donated a sum of Rs 2 crores for the flood relief efforts in the State of Assam.
As regards Priyanka, it seems like the Assam Government's gamble in appointing a complete 'outsider' as the ambassador of the Tourism Industry in the State does not seem to have paid off, as the tourism industry in the State saw a steep decline in 2018. Who do you think should assume the mantle of the next 'Tourism Ambassador' of Assam? Kindly share your thoughts with us!
