In a sensational incident, it has been discovered that a missing rickshaw puller from Mangaldai has been languishing inside a Bangladesh jail for the last three years.
Mukul Hazarika (40), a father of three sons, allegedly went missing three years back while he was earning his daily bread as a rickshaw puller at Mangaldai's Janaramchowka area. Although a missing entry was lodged in Mangaldoi Police Station, no news regarding the person was received.
That was until recently when a letter was issued by the Deputy High Commissioner of India in Bangladesh, Biswadip Dey. Vide letter no. DAC/CONS/411/03/2019 dated May 5, 2019 informed the Principal Secretary of Home and Political Department with a copy to the Chief Secretary of Assam and the Deputy Commissioner of Assam that one Mukul Hazarika, son of Phuleswar Hazarika of Village Hodapara under Mangaldai Police in Darrang district.
The letter also mentions that the Assam man has been languishing in jail after completing a sentence due to a lack of necessary response from the Assam Government regarding his nationality verification.
Mukul's father Phuleswar, wife Kanchan, and his children are ecstatic on receiving news of his whereabouts, but have expressed an inability to receive him in Bangladesh due to financial constraints. It remains to be seen what the local authorities will do to reunite this poor rickshaw puller with his long-suffering family, but we are keeping our fingers crossed for now and hoping for the best!
