Guwahati, April 2, 2019:
It is well known that money plays an important role in politics and the public often makes the assumption that politicians are rolling in dough. Thus, in this segment 'Assets Watch', we shall analyze the wealth of the prime Contenders in each of the Constituencies of the Northeastern part of India.
First, we come to the Upper Assam Constituency of Kaliabor which is a strong Congress stronghold. The BJP has been unable to hurt the Congress in the Constituency despite riding piggyback on the 'Modi wave' in the 2014 General Elections. This time, though, the BJP-AGP-BPF coalition has fielded former AASU leader Moni Madhab Mahanta.
First, the Congress candidate. Gaurav Gogoi, who is the son of former CM Tarun Gogoi is the sitting MP and will be contesting again from the Constituency. As per the affidavit he submitted during the nomination process, the Gogoi scion has declared assets worth an impressive Rs. 38,11,641. His wife, Claire, on the other hand, has assets worth Rs. 95,61,811.
The AGP's Moni Madhab Madhab, one of three Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) members chosen by the alliance to contest, is a newer entrant to politics. The former student leader has movable assets worth Rs. 18,75,757 and has inherited assets worth Rs. 8,75,000.
