The Supreme Court on Monday directed the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to publish its final draft by July 31, 2019.
The SC also mentioned that the hearing for the same will be held by the first week of March.
The bench of sitting judges headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi denied accepting the plea of the Central Government to extend the date of publication and the court expressed dissatisfaction over the Centre’s move.
It is being alleged that the machinations of the Home Ministry are on the verge of destroying the NRC procedure.
The court has also alleged that the centre has not changed the duties of the officials involved in the NRC procedures due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The SC rejected the plea to put on hold the NRC processes during the elections. It further directed the Election Commission not to appoint NRC officials in election duty.
Further hearing on the matter is to be held by the first week of March.
