Guwahati, March 31, 2019:

In an interesting development, two more cadres of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) have surrendered to the Armed Forces on Sunday. The cadres turned themselves over to the authorities at Pengeri in Tinsukia district.

The cadres have been identified as Punakon Chetia AKA Rojoni Asom (23), a resident of Pengeri and Jintu Sonowal AKA Tutul Asom of Kakopothar. Chetia joined the militant outfit in 2015 whereas Sonowal joined in 2016.

Arms and ammunition have also been recovered from the two ULFA cadres. Twenty-eight live rounds of AK-47, ninety rounds of M-16, A 9 mm pistol, eleven rounds of 9 mm ammunition and a single hand grenade were recovered.

It is to be mentioned that insurgent groups from the Northeast have been sent scampering after the Myanmar army started a crackdown against the groups which include the NDFB, ULFA, NSCN (K), among others. Many militants have surrendered since the crackdown began and over 20 militants have been reported to have been killed in combat with Myanmar's 'Tatmadow' since the crackdown began.
