Congress President Rahul Gandhi has admitted his defeat in the Amethi Constituency of Uttar Pradesh in the 2019 General Elections .
Although the Gandhi scion managed to win comfortably in the Wayanad constituency of Kerala (where he is leading by over 8 lakh votes), he is trailing Union Minister Smriti Irani in the Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing the press here, a dejected looking Rahul conceded defeat although there are many votes which are yet to counted.
Rahul Gandhi congratulated Narendra Modi on the election victory. He also thanked the Congress workers for giving it their all in the run-up to the election. He also said that the two parties, the Congress and BJP have different ideologies. Rahul further stressed that the Congress will come back stronger in coming times as many people believe in the Congress' ideology.
"People of India have have decided that Narendra Modi will be the Prime Minister, and as the people of India, I fully respect the", he told mediapersons here.
Rahul also congratulated BJP candidate on her victory Smriti Irani on her victory and asked her to to look after the constituency with "love".
Gandhi is currently trailing against Irani by more than 35,000 votes and faces an imminent defeat at the party stronghold for over 20 years.
In fact, this will only be the second time in the history of the elections that a non-Congress party will win from the Amethi constituency.
Rahul's shock defeat will further dampen Congress spirits as they are already heading towards one of the worst election defeats in recent times.
