Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Friday took up a plea seeking bail of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The court has scheduled its next hearing on November 19. Gogoi was arrested in December 12 last for his role in the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi stated that the witness’s statement was not enough to file a case under the UAPA against the peasant activist.
A division bench of Gauhati High Court comprising justices Kalyan Roy Surana and Ajit Borthakur heard Gogoi’s bail plea.

Senior Supreme Court advocate Ahmadi from Delhi represented Gogoi and argued for about three hours, presenting his case for getting bail.
It may be mentioned that Advocate Ahmadi argued that the testimony of two key witnesses on the basis of which a chargesheet has been filed against Gogoi under the Criminal Activities Prevent Act, is not enough.
As per reports, the senior advocate pointed out some information based on the statement of the two witnesses which has allegedly been concealed by the investigating agency.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta is likely to argue in the next hearing for the investigating agency NIA on November 19.
Gogoi was granted bail on October 1 by a special court here in one of the two cases being probed by the NIA in connection with his alleged role in the violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam last year.
Despite the rising clamour for the peasant leader's release, he finds himself imprisoned on charges which have been slammed as his supporters as "bogus." Meanwhile, Gogoi's KMSS has formed a political party called 'Raijor Dal' which wishes to float him as the CM candidate in the 2021 Assembly elections in Assam.
