Shillong, June 6, 2019:

National People’s Party (NPP) led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is likely to get recognition from the Election Commission of India (ECI) as a national party by this week.

The NPP has fulfilled the criteria to qualify as a national party after winning five seats in the recently held Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.

Since the party is recognized as a State Party in four states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, it has fulfilled the criteria to get recognition as a national party.

Sources informed Inside Northeast that the ECI is likely to announce granting the status of the national party to NPP this week. The NPP had applied for the national party status and it will be the first political party from the Northeast to get the status.
