New Delhi, October 7, 2019:

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to three scientists - William Kaelin, Sir Peter Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on Monday morning.

As per the official statement of the Nobel Committee, all the three scientists were honoured for their discoveries of ‘how cells sense and adapt to oxygen and availability’.

William G. Kaelin Jr and Gregg L. Semenza from Americans shared the prestigious prize with Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe of the UK. The Twitter handle of the Nobel Prize took to Twitter to share the coveted honor.

It may be mentioned here that the fact is that animals need oxygen for the conversion of food into useful energy. While the fundamental importance of oxygen has been recognized for centuries, it is not clear how cells adapt to changes in levels of oxygen. The Nobel laureates revealed the mechanism of one of life’s most essential adaptive processes by identifying molecular machinery that regulates the activity of genes in response to varying levels of oxygen.

The statement added, “They established the basis for our understanding of how oxygen levels affect cellular metabolism and physiological function. Their discoveries have also paved the way for promising new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.”
