The world sparrow day is celebrated on March 20th Worldwide. The Population of these birds is degrading day by day for which the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco- Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international Organisations across the world took the initiative to save these birds. The CEO of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority(GMDA) Dr M Angamathu inaugurated a sparrow house at Sraddhanjali Kannan on the occasion of the World Sparrow Day in Guwahati today.
The reason behind the common sparrows getting extinct because of mindless urbanisation. They are losing not just their natural habitats but also the essential human touch they need. The conservationist also attributed the depleting population of sparrows to the increased use of packed food, insecticides in farming, and changing lifestyles, resulting in an inadequate availability of food for the birds. Due to the "matchbox styled" architecture it creates difficulty for the sparrows to locate pockets for building their nest. Unlike pigeons that can make nests on ledges, sparrows need cavities to build their nests. Since the new matchbox style buildings don't have cavities, sparrows are now homeless.
