Guwahati, November 30, 2019:

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday lambasted the Centre over its move to implement the Citizenship Bill, and assured that the Congress party would vote against it.

Ramesh further condemned the BJP party for the ruckus over the NRC, and said that the Bill will only stir up trouble, as there is no mechanism to evict the illegal Bangladeshis and transport them back to their native land.

Recalling a recent tour to a detention camp in Assam, Ramesh said that of the 70 people lodged there, 17 were 'declared foreigners' who had strayed into Indian soil, and wanted to go back. "However, Bangladesh will never take them back, and now they are stuck here", Ramesh explained.

Stating that the "CAB and the NRC are two masalas to keep the pot boiling", Ramesh also added that "politics is art of pragmatic opportunity". Ramesh predicted that in the next 12 months, the economy will go down further, and issues like NRC and CAB will steal all the limelight.

Reacting to the BJP's loss in the recently defeat in the Maharashtra political hemisphere, Ramesh said that the saffron party has not become completely "toothless", although he did admit that the saffron party has been considerably weakened.

At the 2nd edition of the Youth Conclave, Ramesh further went on to predict that the party is set for an unpleasant surprise in the upcoming polls in Jharkhand, where the 'star power' of the leader, Modi, has started to wane.
