The newly constructed footpath near the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar, housing the offices of the Chief Minister and his cabinet ministers, is proving to be perilous for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Wide and exposed drains, a stark example of irresponsible civil work, are posing a great threat to the safety of school children, senior citizens, cyclists, and other passersby.
The negligence in addressing this safety hazard by the Municipal, district administration, and smart city authorities is causing growing concerns among the locals. The drains, originally designed to mitigate flooding, have become potential traps for solid waste and domestic refuse, exacerbating blockages that endanger public health. Furthermore, these open drains put the lives of residents and animals at risk, especially during flooding incidents.
Speaking with India Today NE, concerned citizens and school children stated their apprehensions regarding the exposed drains on the footpath. They urged the government to address this issue urgently to avert any unfortunate accidents.
One nurse expressed her concerns, stating, "During the night, when visibility is low, it's extremely risky for both young and elderly citizens to navigate these open drains. Any mishap could result in injuries or worse."
