Arunachal Pradesh: New Urban Development Minister pledges housing reforms

Balo Raja, the newly appointed Minister for Urban Affairs, Civil Aviation, and Land Management of Arunachal Pradesh, was warmly welcomed at the Civil Secretariat today as he assumed office. Raja, a seasoned politician and third-term MLA from the Palin-Chambang constituency, has pledged to transform the state's housing sector and support urban development.

Raja, who was first elected in 2004, reclaimed his seat in 2019 under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) banner after a loss in 2009. His recent victory in the 2024 elections saw him secure a significant margin of over 5,000 votes against his National People's Party (NPP) rival, Taring Mayu.

In his inaugural address as Minister, Raja emphasized his commitment to advancing key projects under the Urban Development department. He highlighted plans to allocate housing quarters to eligible Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, ensuring that support reaches those most in need.

Addressing his Civil Aviation portfolio, Raja announced that the Union government had approved the construction of several new Advanced Landing Grounds and airports, including a significant project in Dirang. "Work will commence soon, following the completion of necessary formalities laid out by the Ministry," Raja stated.

Expressing gratitude to his constituents in Palin-Chambang and the broader Kra Daadi district, Raja thanked them for their overwhelming support, which has enabled him to serve in the Pema Khandu-led BJP government. "I am honored to continue representing the people of my constituency and am dedicated to serving as a minister with integrity and dedication," he said.

Raja also underscored his intention to bolster the efficiency of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and ensure departmental support aligns with their capacities. "My goal is to make the Urban Development and Housing department a model of efficiency, completing projects promptly while maintaining quality and transparency," he asserted.

Looking ahead, Raja plans to conduct comprehensive meetings with department officials and bureaucrats to devise a strategic roadmap for Arunachal Pradesh's urban development. This initiative includes a particular focus on the twin capital cities of Itanagar and Naharlagun.
