Arunachal sees increased tourist footfall as snow-covered Sela Tunnel draws attention

Tourists from across the country are flocking to the Arunachal's Sela Tunnel area, where a thick blanket of snow has transformed the landscape, offering an unforgettable winter experience.

Located at an altitude of 13,000 feet above sea level, the Sela Tunnel, consisting of two separate tunnels, is a major attraction for travelers seeking to experience the beauty of the snow-clad mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

The region, particularly the North and South portals of the Sela Tunnel, is currently covered in a stunning layer of snow, drawing visitors eager to witness the breathtaking views and enjoy the chill of the single-digit temperatures. The snowfall in Tawang’s mountainous ranges has made it a prime destination for those looking to escape the heat of other parts of India.

For many tourists, the weather plays a significant role in attracting them to the Northeast, especially during the winter months. As the rest of the country swelters in the heat, Tawang offers a cool respite, with snow-capped peaks and fresh mountain air.

Tourists are delighted by the contrast between the humid heat of cities like Guwahati and the cool, crisp weather of Tawang, located about 450 km from Assam’s capital.

“Weather plays a big role in attracting tourists to the Northeast, and we must harness this changing weather pattern as a unique selling point for our tourism circuit. The chill in the air and the snow-capped mountains create the perfect setting for an adventurous journey to Tawang,” said Namgey Tsering, MLA of Tawang.

One tourist from Chirang, Assam, likened Tawang to Switzerland, praising the serene atmosphere and the unique winter experience. “While Assam is experiencing hot, humid weather, Tawang remains cool with snowfall at various locations,” she said.

With its pollution-free environment, breathtaking landscapes, and pleasant weather, Tawang continues to be one of the top attractions in Northeast India, offering a perfect getaway for tourists seeking peace and adventure.
