Arunachal team win Asmita Taekwondo League; Assam, Manipur secure runner-up spots

The Arunachal Pradesh Taekwondo team emerged overall champions in the third phase of the second Asmita Taekwondo League, 2024-25 (Khelo India Women's Taekwondo League) that drew to a close at the Khelo India multipurpose stadium, in the state on October 6.
 

The hosts delivered a brilliant performance and maintained the lead, accumulating 96 points in both Poomsae and Kyorugi categories, with an impressive haul of 6 gold, 6 silver, and 8 bronze medals.
 

Team Assam secured the runners-up position with 81 points, securing 4 gold, 4 silver, and 11 bronze medals in what was a highly competitive championship. 
 

Team Manipur also put up an impressive show, finishing just behind with 65 points, bagging 5 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
 

The four-day event (October 3-6) saw participation from 15 teams, including three paramilitary forces and 12 states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, and West Bengal.
 

Attending the closing ceremony, Capital DC Talo Potom praised the competitive spirit and teamwork of athletes, saying, “It is heartening to see such tremendous talent and sportsmanship among these women athletes. They have set an example for others by demonstrating not only skill but also discipline and dedication. This League shows the immense potential of our youth, particularly women, in the sports arena.”
 

In his speech, Arunachal Press Club vice president Bengia Ajum emphasised the importance of nurturing talent at the grassroots level, stating, “This event is a testament to the power of sports in empowering women and building community spirit. The impressive performances we’ve seen over the past few days highlight the need for more such platforms to hone talent.”
 

Director of Sports, Tadar Apa lauded the athletes for their determination and resilience, noting, “The level of competition in this phase of the Asmita League has been exceptional. It is inspiring to witness the hard work and passion these athletes have brought to the event. We will continue to support initiatives that promote and develop sports in the region.”
 

Arunachal Taekwondo Association general secretary Likha Robin also spoke on the occasion. Several renowned personalities, including Kipa Ajay, Toko Teki, Nily Likha Tabo, and L Sokun Singh were also present at the event.
