Arunachal: Water scarcity hampers PM Poshan Scheme in Itanagar schools

The effective implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana, previously known as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, is facing severe challenges in Itanagar's government schools due to a lack of potable water. Authorities from approximately 70 government schools in the capital city have reported that the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has failed to provide a consistent water supply. This shortfall is particularly detrimental given the soaring temperatures, as students below Class 8 receive khichdi meals only thrice a week instead of daily.

Principals and headmasters from schools in Itanagar and Naharlagun have expressed their struggles in maintaining proper hygiene and preparing meals without an adequate water supply. The scarcity affects the cleanliness of toilets and the school premises, exacerbating health risks. Another pressing issue is the insufficient wages for cooks, who earn as little as Rs. 1500 per month, making it challenging for schools to employ them consistently.

The city's PHE and Power departments have been criticized for failing to provide regular water and electricity, leaving residents to cope with high temperatures without these essential services. Additionally, there are concerns over the distribution of uniforms and shoes. Despite significant funds being allocated, the Education Department has not yet provided these items to poor tribal students. Commissioner of Education Amjad Tak mentioned that Rs. 18 crore has been allocated for this purpose, with plans to disburse funds directly to students' bank accounts. However, the lack of bank accounts among many students poses a significant hurdle.

In an exclusive interview with India Today, Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona acknowledged the challenges in implementing the PM Poshan scheme. “I have reviewed the issues and, as a local MLA from Mechuka, I am familiar with the implementation gaps. We are exploring best practices from other states to ensure our students receive hygienic and nutritious food as per the guidelines. As I have recently taken over this department, it will take some time to understand and resolve these issues comprehensively,” Sona stated.
